A return to terror in Texarkana ‘The Town That Dreaded Sundown’ (2014) -movie review

What happens when a town’s dark past comes back to haunt the community? When gruesome murders once again start in the town of Texarkana they are forced to relive their blood soaked past.

Researching this film I uncovered the true story of the ‘Moonlight Murders’ which occurred in 1946 where an unidentified ‘Phantom’ slaughtered at least 8 people in 10 weeks in the town of Texarkana. People often have a fascination with real life crimes which manifested itself in the 1976 horror film The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Directed by Charles B. Pierce it’s a loose retelling of the Moonlight Murders filmed in a gritty cinéma vérité style and it was quite popular in its time (also one of the first slasher films ever made). Its impressive production has allowed it to become a cult horror classic today.
